Why Barack lie about his campaign being funded by small donations from regular citizens?

They just want people to believe that their millions are coming from regular people. The picture is if regular people are sending 20-50$ per person and they've raised millions that way then a majority of Americans are supporting them. It's deceptive of course and not true but at this point it doesn't matter how they try to manipulate...the truth has hurt them.
