What is the point of 'Californication'? it seems to be thinly veiled starring Mr Duchovny?

I mean don't get me wrong, David Duchovny is REALLY gorgeous, I could stare at him all day long and would loooooooove to have played 'Dana Scully' in X files. But alas I just switched off after 5 torturous minutes of trying to find the story line !!!
