What would be a good exercise routine for a beginner?

I just joined a gym and the staff seems to always be unavailable. I want to lose weight. I want to know how much time should I spend on the treadmill for example. what other machines should I try? How many repetitions would I need to do? I want the workout to be effective, but I don't want to overdo it .
